Association football is a sport that is commonly known as either football or soccer. Within the UK Association football is known as football and this is regarded as the nations sport. The sport is played between two teams that consist of eleven players. The aim of the game is to score a goal and win the match. The sport is played using a spherical ball and there is a goal net at each end of the football pitch. This sport is the most popular sport in the world and it is played by over 250 million players in the world. Within the football leagues those teams that win will be awarded with three points, if the teams draw they will be awarded with one point each and when a team loses they do not receive any points.
The Football Association in the UK is in charge of all professional football leagues within the UK. This organisation was created in 1863 and it has now developed into a major organisation that has a great influence within the world of football. On a global level the body in charge of managing football is FIFA, Federation International Football Association. FIFA is also the organiser of the World Cup that occurs every four years. The teams that play in the World Cup are national teams that usually feature the best players from within the country. The manager of the national country team is in charge of selecting the players that play within the team. The world cup is recognised as the most prestigious prize in football and the country that has won this award the most is Brazil. England have not been very successful in this competition and the last time they won it was 1966. In order to be the host of the world cup a country must bid to FIFA and put forward a case as to why they should be selected.
In the UK football is very popular and it is the most popular sport in the country. The most prestigious league which is recognised worldwide is the Premier League. Within this league are some of the biggest and well known teams which include Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United. In the UK there are numerous other leagues including the Championship, League One and League Two. Football in the UK is also extensively popular on an amateur basis and many children start at a very young age.
Some of the biggest celebrities within the UK play football and they have developed into much more than sportsmen. Women’s football is becoming increasingly popular and is now recognised on a national level. The money spent on players by professional football clubs is extremely high.
